Counting Dead Women Canada 2015

COUNTING DEAD WOMEN CANADA

If you are using the research from this project, please acknowledge the work of the NL Feminists and Allies researchers. Thank you.

Please message us if there are any errors or omissions. This is a list of girls and women suspected to have been murdered by men and their deaths were identified as murders in 2015.

NL Feminists and Allies also thanks the many journalists in Canada who continue to report on the epidemic of violence against women and whose work is used here as reference.

We also acknowledge the original help and guidance of Karen Ingala Smith who began this project in the UK in 2012 as well as REAL for Women Man Murders Woman 2015 Campaign in Australia who have also recently started counting dead women. There are a number of other similar international initiatives documenting #femicide.

    1. So far, in 2015, all of the solved murders have been committed by men.

As for the unsolved murders one can surmise that the perpetrators are most likely to also be men.

    2. There has been one woman killed sometime between May 16-17 by another woman: Dorothy Dykens, 89 of Winnipeg Melissa Gabriel, 35 has been charged with manslaughter. Gabriel had a history of 43 previous convictions. The intensive media coverage of this particular case merely highlights the lack of coverage for most of the victims of male violence on this list.

We should thank Karen Ingala Smith for her work...it has inspired many groups to start compiling lists like this. All countries should start maintaining a femicide census so we can see the worldwide epidemic of murderous male violence against women and girls.

At any rate, you are correct in that this list is meant to illustrate how often the system has failed many of these victims and their families and hopefully bring about much needed changes.

  17. I hate the term domestic violence. I think that the way we use in some way negates The heart of the matter and makes it so that these horrific acts are to be taken a little less seriously. It makes it easier for society to dismiss the crime... I am compiling my own list of pregnant woman that were murdered in Canada. I want to show people that there is absolutely no legal accountability for the babies in these situations. My daughter Molly was less than ten weeks from being born last December when somebody murdered her and her mother in their home. I hope to change the law so that unborn victims of crime can be accounted for. We are way too easy on the men who do these horrible things in the first place, but when it is a pregnant woman there should be consideration given to both lives that were lost.
I put a link to this blog on my website so people can see... I wish everyone could see this. http://www.mollymatters.org/

    1. I was so very sorry to hear of your tragic loss Jeff. It was in hearing about Cassandra's case that helped to prompt the start of this list at the beginning of this year.

As you are well aware, there would need to be a huge change in our current laws in order for the murder of an unborn and wanted child to be a chargeable offence. I applaud that you are raising awareness of this issue and thank-you for adding another element to the discussion of so called "domestic violence" (I hate the term too).

Thank-you so very much for reaching out. I hope that our new federal government takes a more proactive stance with respect to issues of femicide.

  19. I work in an Violence Against Women agency that has it's annual general meeting each year on December 6. We commemorate those women lost in Montreal and we try to capture each woman that is taken in Ontario. We will hold a candle light vigil in honour of all of these women. My list usually comes from OAITH (Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses). Thank you for your extensive research and your commitment to educate people on the prevalence of violence against women.

    1. Thank-you Anonymous. I was aware that a number of provincial initiatives existed but nothing for all of Canada. The problem needs to be addressed both on a national and provincial level and I look forward to seeing what our new national government will do.
